Adapting Mentorship
Overview | Teachers & Mentorship | Flourishing Schools | Flourishing Congregations
The concept of adaptive mentorship originated with Dr. Edwin Ralph, a longtime colleague and dear friend of Keith’s, as “contextual supervision.” Over the years Edwin and Keith further developed the model, is practices and framings to become “adaptive mentorship.” Many different professions, around the world, have taken up the adaptive mentorship model, including the dietician professionals who created these illustrative videos. Further, the notion of adapting mentorship to particular cultural understandings was greatly enhanced through collaborations with colleagues in the South Pacific (see several articles that depict findings from various engagements that Keith and Edwin had with those colleagues and communities). Fundamentally, adaptive mentorship is about putting the onus on the mentor to adjust or adapt their approach to their mentee in a fashion that meets the developmental stage or place of that mentee (typically contingent on maturity of competence and level of confidence). The model is currently undergoing some further development to give attention to well-being and resilience as well as task and psychological maturity/capacity.
